IPL-Indian Premier League. I think all who are reading this blog(at least from India) know already about it. If any one of you doesnt know about it, then I will say he/she has very bad general knowledge. So this blog is for those people(above mentioned), and also for them who are interested in cricket(most Indians are crazy about it).

What is IPL?
I am directly starting the topic IPL(not on ‘Cricket in India’).
BCCI(Board of Control for Cricket in India) was the only non-government body to control cricket in India, thats until ‘ICL’ came into picture. ‘ICL’ was introduced by Zee Telefilms and Kapil Dev parallel to the existing BCCI. BCCI, later, introduced ‘IPL’ due to fear about control and money(profit that was to get divided). That means, the basic reason of creating IPL is to compete with ICL.

When IPL introduced the BCCI had initial thoughts about this league; like, playing game with players from all over world so that the spirit of game received a boost, and that this will increase the popularity of cricket around the world(i.e. to compete with other games like soccer), and also to find the young talented cricketers for our national team.
IPL structure:
For this season-45 Days event, 59 matches,8 teams. Last three matches(two semifinals and one final) are in Mumbai from where BCCI will get more money. IPL event will give profit more than $1 billion, 40% of which will go to IPL, 54% distributed to franchisees and 6% to prize money. The money will be distributed in these proportions till 2017, after which the share of IPL will be 50%, franchisees 45% and prize money 5%.
As per 6th, the higher post government employee will get salary 1lakh per month(12 lakh p.a.), M. S. Dhoni will get Rs 6 crores payment for 45 days. This is too much bigger amount as per Class 1 employee. That means, Cricketers will get richer, thanks to BCCI.
Actually IPL is globalized form of BCCI. Till now BCCI controlled Cricket in India only, but IPL will control the cricket all over the world! IPL has been clearly more successful than ICL due to event management skill of BCCI officials.
Some Drawbacks:
Spirit of game is not as per excpectation due to the franchisees (owner of teams) selected the top players from the respected state as team Icon(like S.R. Tendulkar as Icon for Mumbai Indians), and some cases like Harbhajan-Sreesanth, Ganguly-Warne have disturbed the spirit of the game.

For the franchisees, IPL is a money making machine than a fair-play game, so thats we see incidents of people getting angry upon their team’s losses(example Vijay Mallya).

No prizes for guessing where all this profit for the BCCI will come from. It will come from us!! Stadiums packed fully, people viewing the live matches and ’saas-bahu serials’ TRPs going down, SMS contest money..and so on.. But on other side, there are lots of reality shows on TV channels too, that are making money. IPL is not the only one. After all, IPL is entertaining people in this holiday season.

Good topic to block on……
But I have a thing to say. BCCI is commanding the cricket in India that is too bad coz they don’t allow the people to get in the team if a player has played in ICL, doesn’t matter whether that player plays the best game which ultimately can not play in the National team to represent India.

You are right, BCCI should allow the best players from ICL but there is problem both are non gorvenment organizations,So no organization will support other organizations employee.

Hi Pramod.. Well written blog..
Its good to see Indian Entertainment going global. IPL is clearly of the stature of “SuperBowl” in USA where the whole country watches and gets entertained.
One thing, though, which makes IPL different from ICL is that the former is BIG due to “star power” and “huge money from franchises owned by millionaires and billionaires”, while the latter concentrates on bringing in “fresh” talent. And as Jiten has rightly said, BCCI should look towards making the “INDIAN”(often read “BCCI”) team stronger by including the talents from ICL too. After all, they are from India too, and people of India look to BCCI’s team as “INDIA’s” team. Ofcourse, its a private firm, but dont people change jobs and shift companies?

Me too didnt like the BCCI’s decision about ICL players. But I think BCCI wants to give a message to players that ‘we are best if you join us then only you will become national player’ and if that strategy works competitor will close ICL.

Hi Pramod,
I heard that the rivalry in IPL and ICL is to the extent that BCCI is not going to Invite the Kapil Dev and his Partners in ICL to the Silver Jubilee ceremony of the 1983 World Cup win. And as we all know Kapil was the Skipper of the world cup winning team if he is not there it will send wrong message in the outside world how dirty politics is there behind this Gentleman’s game.
it’s really unfortunate for Indian cricket lovers

Hi Pramod , good entertaining current topic…..
I am agreeing with Michael and Jiten comments regarding one sided support of IPL player and refusing ICL talented Player.
Every thing is very good in IPL and ICL, only one thing is not much good to supporter of INDIAN CRICKET TEAM (men in Blue) dividing in city basis. Every buddy know comment of Yuvraj Singh, when PanjabXI beat Mumbai Indians.”Thank u for one sided support of Mumbai, but you all forget lot of cricketer from Punjab also playing for INDIA team”

Nice Comment,
Cricket means India,As peoples of India likes and knows cricket more than any other Country ,IPL has been Successful in India.Lets See the How much the torunament in WestIndies will be successful next year ( Same as IPL??? )?
No doubt it makes the cricketer Richer as they are getting huge money than any jobs (government or Non-govt),they entertained Indian Crowd and even the World.
Good to Watch the Matches but there must not be many more matches like 50 matches in tournament, which made peoples boring in middle of tournament.Ok Lets see Who will win… IPL.

Your right Neetesh, people should support all teams not a specific team.
#9 by Pramod - May 27th, 2008 at 17:07
Vishal,I dont think 50 plus(59 to be specific) matches is not that much big number, also as per me uptil today whole IPL event is entertaining.
And BCCI would have thought that’Every team should get enough chance to show their talent’.

yes, i agree that BCCI should select players from ICL.
Indian team should be the best team in the world that from any part of cricket in india.Best players are also there in ICL.In India cricket is known as god , people ar ecrazy about cricket. So we should select a best team. IPL is a money maker for cricketer as well as for the BCCI. IPL is more famous than ICL due to a famous international players from all over the world.
